The ISAAA, a non-profit organization that provides information on agricultural biotechnology, released a report in January 2005, estimating that the total global area of transgenic crops planted in 2004 was 81 million hectares. That is equivalent to 200 million acres. These crops were grown by 8.25 million farmers in seventeen countries.
